EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sen. Chris Wilson (R-LOGAN) has introduced Senate Bill 240 to reform governance in Utah higher education. The bill, introduced following a Jan. 30 report that found financial issues at USU, aims to enhance trustee oversight and clarify administrative roles.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Cache Valley high school students swept more than half the awards at the Utah High School Clean Air Marketing Contest, with winners announced Saturday at Utah State University.  The Herald Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DWR said that highly pathogenic avian influenza continues to affect wild birds (49 dead birds have tested positive across Cache, Box Elder, Davis and Weber counties) near the Great Salt Lake; officials urge residents to report clusters of dead birds and avoid handling them.  KVNU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Logan are providing preventive treatment for people who had direct contact with a cow that tested positive for anthrax at the Utah State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. The Bear River Health Department confirmed the naturally occurring case and said the public remains at very low risk (all exposed individuals are receiving standard care).  KVNU
  • The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said that a new wave of highly pathogenic avian influenza is affecting wild birds near the Great Salt Lake in Cache and Box Elder counties, with several species declining. Officials advise reporting clusters of dead waterfowl (five or more) to a local DWR office for testing.  Cache Valley Daily
