COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Logan Parks and Recreation Department is asking for volunteers to collect golf balls from the edges of the driving range at Logan River Golf Course. Volunteers will gather at the golf ball dispenser and work from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday, March 24 — all participants will be entered in prize drawings.  KVNU
  • Goodwill will open its first store in Logan on March 27 at 8:45 a.m. at 1617 N. Main Street (a 15,000-square-foot space) with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce. The store will offer thrift shopping and support programs while a drawing for five $100 gift cards runs through March 30.  KVNU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Talented young musicians from Mountain Crest and Ridgeline high schools will perform at the upcoming 26th annual Young Artist Cup Music Competition on March 26 and March 27 at Ridgeline High School Auditorium — the first night will showcase vocal and brass, wind and percussion acts.   • Logan High School announced James Mather as its new principal, set to replace retiring Daryl Guymon on July 1 (Guymon served the school district for 30 years).  Cache Valley Daily
  • The Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) at USU in Logan released its fifth white paper out of six on the findings from a study of home life, health care, political participation and allyship. The 46-page report is based on an 82-item survey of 4,721 Utahns (surveyed Oct. 1 to Nov. 20) and shows differences in views between men and women that may help guide future decisions.  Cache Valley Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a workshop on March 18, council member Mark Montgomery asked the Logan Municipal Council to reconsider purchasing a 15‑megawatt interest in an Idaho natural gas power plant to help offset the loss of base load power from retiring coal plants—this follows earlier decisions on power contracts amid growing energy challenges. Council members remain divided, with some favoring renewable energy options and a public hearing on the issue set for April 1.  KVNU
  • At a council workshop session on March 18, Mark Montgomery urged the Logan Municipal Council to reconsider buying a 15-megawatt interest in an Idaho natural gas power plant as two retiring coal-fired plants will reduce base load energy by 18 megawatts. Council members approved a Millard County contract and began a study for a 15-megawatt solar array (with a public hearing scheduled for April 1) to address future energy needs.  Cache Valley Daily
