COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Logan officials and residents will celebrate Arbor Day as Mayor Holly Daines proclaimed the holiday for Friday, April 25. A tree-planting ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 24 (3:30 to 4:30) at Merlin Olsen Central Park (300 East Center Street) where participants need to bring their own shovels and gloves.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Logan residents will join a formal tree-planting event on Thursday, April 24 at Merlin Olsen Central Park from 3:30 to 4:30 to help plant a Bur Oak tree as Mayor Holly Daines declared in her Arbor Day proclamation. The proclamation also designates April 25 as Bird Day and noted Logan’s Tree City USA status since 1984 while light refreshments will be served.  KVNU

CRIME NEWS

  • A former Logan police officer, Michael Ryan Montoya (34), was sentenced to one year in jail and four years probation after pleading no contest to charges of aggravated assault, stalking, and sexual battery, following a domestic violence incident on July 18. He is not allowed to have contact with the victim and will serve his sentence in Emery County as ordered by Logan’s 1st District Court.  KVNU
  • Former Logan City Police officer Michael Ryan Montoya, 34, pleaded no contest to charges of aggravated assault, stalking, and sexual battery related to domestic violence incidents (one occurring on July 18, 2022) and was sentenced on April 21 to one year in jail (to be served in Emery County) with 48 months of probation and a no-contact order for the victim.  Cache Valley Daily

  • The Utah Theatre in Logan will celebrate Star Wars Day early on May 3 by showing A New Hope at 2 p.m., The Empire Strikes Back at 4:30 p.m., and Return of the Jedi at 7 p.m.—the theatre will also present additional Star Wars films throughout May.  KVNU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Utah State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for its inaugural four-year doctor of veterinary medicine program this fall—students will complete the entire course in state and be on track for accreditation based on a letter from the American Veterinary Medical Association. The program, which will graduate its first class by 2029, marks a key milestone in expanding local veterinary education.  KVNU
  • Utah State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in Logan is now accepting applicants for its inaugural four-year veterinary program starting this fall and approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA COE), making it the first program in Utah to offer a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. Students will complete all four years at USU and are set to graduate in 2029, which will boost local veterinary care and support the state's agricultural industry.  Cache Valley Daily
