CRIME NEWS

  • Cache County Sheriff’s deputies in Logan arrested several individuals Wednesday after a traffic stop led to a drug arrest, with searches at two residences recovering illegal firearms, methamphetamine evidence, and a homemade explosive device — all suspects are held without bail pending arraignment.  KVNU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Logan’s Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 12 noon to 8 p.m. at the Cache County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by Cache Valley Media Group + organized by JUAN 97.3 FM, the event will feature dance performances, live music, and food vendors celebrating Mexican culture.  KVNU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Graduation at USU’s Logan campus began yesterday with a 7 p.m. ceremony at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum and continues today with college convocations and hooding ceremonies that will confer 7,938 degrees on 7,185 students. USU’s commencement speaker is alumnus M. William — Willy Lensch — who will receive an honorary degree alongside philanthropist Kem C. Gardner.  KVNU
  • On Tuesday, the Logan City School District Board of Education ratified negotiated agreements that extend its current contract—this step comes as the state law on collective bargaining for public employees remains under discussion.  The Herald Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USU researchers have released new findings that show earthquake slip along the Wasatch Fault is possible because worn and slick fault rocks allow easier movement during quakes. The study led by assistant professor Srisharan Shreedharan covers 240 miles from southern Idaho to central Utah + it offers important clues for future earthquake risk monitoring.  KVNU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The two-day nuclear energy summit in Draper ended on April 29 when Governor Spencer Cox, Governor Brad Little, and Governor Mark Gordon signed a memorandum of understanding—agreeing to work together on energy policy, infrastructure, and nuclear innovation. The agreement also sets a plan for Utah to build an Advanced Nuclear and Energy Institute that will link state universities and research labs to help make energy more reliable and affordable.  Cache Valley Daily
