CRIME NEWS

  • A 20-year-old Hyrum man was sentenced to 364 days in Cache County Jail for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl last year—he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and four counts of sexual battery, faces a $1,500 fine, and will be placed on the sex-offender registry.  Cache Valley Daily
  • A 32-year-old Providence man was sentenced on June 2 in Logan’s 1st District Court to two years in Cache County Jail and four years of probation for possessing hundreds of photos and videos of child sexual abuse material — he admitted to downloading and sharing the material while offering no excuse and has been placed on the sex-offender registry.  Cache Valley Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • According to a report from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, more than one in four Utah State students received Pell Grants and 24.2% took out federal student loans during the 2022-23 academic year. The average Pell Grant award was $5,537 and the typical loan was $7,550—figures that rank among the highest for Utah's public colleges.  KVNU
  • Operation Literacy will host READ-A-CON, a free literacy event, at Hyrum Library at 50 W. Main Street in Hyrum on Saturday, June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the event invites children ages 0 to 11 and their families to earn prizes, receive free dyslexia screenings and access educational resources for early reading support.  Cache Valley Daily

  • On June 4, six candidates already in the race were joined by five more, bringing the total to 11 for mayor and council in Logan’s municipal election. Candidates must file their Declaration of Candidacy in person at the city recorder office until 5 p.m. on Friday, June 6 — there is no fee.  KVNU
