  • Logan City officials announced that Pioneer Day festivities will be held on Thursday, July 24 at Willow/Horseshoe Park, beginning with fun runs and sports tournaments in the morning, a parade at 10 a.m., and a fireworks display at 10 p.m.—local music will highlight the event with the Bear River Ramblers performing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Mile Marker 6 from 7 to 8 p.m., and Michelle Lambert at 8:30 p.m.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Fifty Cache Valley residents gathered at Merlin Olsen Central for a community picnic hosted by We The People Cache Valley and the local League of Women Voters to learn about upcoming municipal elections and hear from local candidates.  The Herald Journal
  • The Cache Community Connection’s Summer Noon Concert and Lectures Series at the Historic Logan Tabernacle has grown in popularity with an average of 254 attendees, including local residents and visitors from Arizona—featuring local talent like Bob Parson and a variety of inspirational speakers. Fourth-year coordinator Carol Foht said the series will continue to bring community members together until July 31.  KVNU

CRIME NEWS

  • Charles Allan Olson, a 48-year-old from Newton, pleaded no contest to charges of attempted lewdness, sexual battery, and attempted child voyeurism on July 14 at Logan’s 1st District Court—he will serve 120 days in jail with credit for time served, pay $15,660 for victim therapy, and must return to court on Jan. 12 for a review hearing.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Early Friday morning, Logan police arrested 37-year-old South Ogden woman Kindy Ann Viator after she allegedly fled from officers and troopers, striking several police cruisers during a chase that sent her into business parking lots near North Main Street — three officers were injured and she is held without bail on multiple assault charges.  Cache Valley Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 17th, the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation awarded more than $460,000 in grants to 78 education and STEM programs across Utah—supporting local efforts in Cache Valley and northern Utah. Bridgerland Technical College will fund EMT and paramedic scholarships and Utah State University’s College of Engineering will use the grant for its E-State program—boosting local STEM education.  KVNU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USU Extension worked with KUTV 2 News and reporter Brian Schnee to make a video that shows how homeowners in the Wildland/Urban Interface can protect their homes from wildfires. The video explains how to create safe home ignition zones (immediate, intermediate, and extended) after the Forsyth Fire burned 13 homes in Pine Valley and advises residents to get home assessments from local fire departments and state agencies.  KVNU
