Good morning, Logan. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 31st of August.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In August many trees show brown, crispy edges on their leaves due to low humidity and strong summer sun—experts say the leaf scorch is usually a seasonal change that is not a long-term threat. They advise deep watering for established trees and careful watering for new ones while addressing soil nutrient issues early in spring.  KVNU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Utah Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety report that traffic fatalities are down nearly 10 percent during the 100 Deadliest Days—summer deaths have dropped 18 percent, though motorcycle fatalities have risen 36 percent. Officials urge drivers and riders to follow safety rules during the coming Labor Day weekend—if everyone takes care, further declines in fatalities can be achieved.  KVNU

SPORTS NEWS

  • USU Aggies opened their season with a win against the Miners—though their finish was less decisive than hoped—and the team will build on the result in upcoming games.  The Herald Journal
