CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, about 3,400 student musicians will gather at Merlin Olsen Field at Utah State University for the Bridgerland Marching Band Invitational, a 25-year tradition featuring 40 high school bands. Sponsored by Mountain Crest High School, the event starts with the National Anthem at 9:15 a.m. and runs until 9:45 p.m., with free tickets for children 10 and under + $9 tickets for those 11 and older.  Cache Valley Daily
  • The Logan Library will host a book signing with mystery writer Craig Johnson on Oct. 10 (6 to 8 p.m.) at 285 North Main Street as he discusses his popular Longmire series.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Logan City has launched an interactive online art map to help residents find public murals and sculptures—users can explore the growing collection on city streets and buildings.  The Herald Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new WalletHub report showed that Utah had the smallest student loan debt in the nation and only Mississippi did worse, while Logan borrowers had a median debt of $17,616 compared to college graduates earning a median of $42,137—equal to 41.8% of yearly pay. Experts warn that rising college costs and high interest rates continue to challenge student borrowers.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Logan School District broke ground on a 10,000 square-foot expansion of its Early Childhood Center on Friday—helped by preschool students—and the $4-5 million project will add more classroom space for early learners.  The Herald Journal
  • Today the Cache County School District Board heard recommendations for two new middle schools and reviewed reading scores across the district—guiding plans for next year—while also considering high school club requests.  The Herald Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Spencer Cox has called the Utah Legislature into its first special session starting at 9 a.m. on Oct. 6. Lawmakers will review new congressional district maps and consider amendments to bills affecting local tax and judicial rules—issues that could impact Cache County.  Cache Valley Daily
  • Gov. Spencer Cox called the Legislature’s first special session of 2025 for Monday, Oct. 6 at 9 a.m. Lawmakers will work on new congressional district maps mandated by the Third District Court & consider local law amendments affecting Cache County and statewide measures such as election records and local option sales taxes.  KVNU
  • On Thursday at the Utah Theatre, Logan City council and mayoral candidates debated public involvement, affordable housing, water and energy — with candidates proposing ideas to boost community engagement and address housing challenges.  The Herald Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Utah ranks as the ninth healthiest state according to a new SmileHub report (it found the state is first for public hospital quality and second for outdoor access). The report also shows that Utah has low medical costs and good results for life expectancy and obesity rates.  Cache Valley Daily
